Since he started as chief legal officer of Tough Mudder in August 2012, Marc Ackerman has participated in one of the company’s 10- to 12-mile obstacle course events, in which he jumped into pools of ice water, crawled through mud and electrified wires, and ran through fire. He says he can’t wait to do it again.

Ackerman traded in the suit and tie that he once donned at Manhattan-based law firms, representing clients like ESPN, Major League Soccer, and the National Football League, for a T-shirt and shorts at Tough Mudder’s Brooklyn headquarters, where he leads a team of five lawyers. It was a move that former colleagues looked upon with skepticism. But Ackerman is pleased with the way it’s worked out. “It wasn’t as huge of a transition as I anticipated, and it is nice to be working at a place where I’m invested in the product,” he says. “I love what we do.”
