If you think the popularity of patents is waning, think again. Almost 1.9 million patent applications were filed at the world’s five largest patent offices in 2012, according to a statistical report published last week by those five offices.

The nearly 90-page IP5 Statistics Report, 2012 Edition was published jointly by the European Patent Office, the Japan Patent Office, the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the State Intellectual Property Office of the People’s Republic of China and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The five IP offices are known collectively as the IP5.
