The recent push to lease property for oil and gas drilling in states like Pennsylvania and Ohio is creating its share of controversy, but as attorney Frederick Coombs III explains, it’s also helping leasing landowners eliminate large debts.

Coombs is the chair of the creditors’ rights and bankruptcy practice group at Youngstown, Ohio–based Harrington, Hoppe & Mitchell. He discusses the issue in a recent post on the firm’s website, citing two big-dollar cases that hinged on the reluctance of oil and gas companies to enter into leases where there were liens on the real estate.
