Identity theft was the top consumer complaint last year, according to a statement from the Federal Trade Commission. Of the 2 million complaints received in 2013, more than 290,000 were related to identity theft, and American consumers reported losing over $1.6 billion to fraud.

“Americans of all ages are vulnerable to identity theft, and it remains the most common consumer complaint to the commission,” said Jessica Rich, the director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection, in a statement. Besides identity theft, rounding out the top 10 complaints are problems with debt collection, banks and lenders, imposter scams, telephone and mobile services, prizes, sweepstakes and lotteries, auto-related complaints, shop-at-home and catalogue sales, television and electronic media and advance payment for credit services.
