Breaches of enterprise and customer data can be a nightmare in any industry. However, in the health-care sector, the risks and potential for legal liability are particularly high. The latest iteration of an annual study conducted by data privacy and protection think thank the Ponemon Institute and sponsored by ID Experts, a software and services company offering data breach solutions, shows that although there’s been a slight drop in the frequency of health-care data breaches this year, companies are still struggling with challenges, including those posed by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

The “Fourth Annual Benchmark Study on Patient Privacy and Data Security,” which is based on interviews with senior personnel at 91 health-care organizations, shows that although the number of data breaches is still high in this sector, there has been a slight dip in frequency this year. In this year’s study, 38 percent of organizations reported they had detected more than five data breach incidents in the last two years—a drop from 45 percent in last year’s study.
