A corporation’s C-suite is no longer complete without a chief compliance officer. The CCO is the guardian of the company’s reputation, who deftly navigates the thicket of international legal regulations that corporations face when conducting business both domestically and overseas. Finding the right CCO isn’t a simple hiring decision; it’s a decision that reflects on an organization’s basic values, appetite for risk and relationship with the larger commercial community. Any good CCO will know the difference between what’s legal and illegal, but the best inspire the company’s employees to act ethically as well as legally. Fostering a culture of compliance can be a daunting task and requires just the right skillset.
What then, should a company look for in a CCO? They should be smart and hardworking, of course, but I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some CCOs who stand out as truly exceptional leaders. Here is a list of five attributes that I believe companies should prioritize when hiring a chief compliance officer:
