School’s almost out for summer, and plenty of teens are looking to make a few dollars, whether they are lifeguarding at the local pool or working behind the counter in retail. However, employing people under 18 comes with some specific challenges and caveats, as U.S. employment law is extra protective of the youngest, and at times most vulnerable, members of the workforce.

This employee demographic gets enhanced coverage under the Fair Labor Standards Act, and is subject to a barrage of rules under federal and state law. “One area you don’t want to mess around with is employing minors—hours, wages or safety,” Joel Barras, a partner at Reed Smith, told CorpCounsel.com.
