Corporate Counsel’s 26th annual General Counsel Conference opened in New York City on Wednesday morning with a keynote address from a former in-house counsel used to dealing with high-stakes and high-profile legal matters: John Rizzo, ex-deputy general counsel and acting general counsel at the Central Intelligence Agency.

Rizzo, who earlier this year authored a memoir, “Company Man: Thirty Years of Controversy and Crisis in the CIA,” is currently a senior counsel at Steptoe & Johnson, but has spent the better part of his career, from 1976 to 2009, working in the CIA’s law department.
