At a time when many law departments must do more with less, the attorneys of Marsh & McLennan Companies have set an excellent example.

We were impressed by the work of general counsel Peter Beshar and his team of 148 lawyers around the world in cutting legal expenses by 61 percent since 2009 at the New York-based insurance brokerage and consulting company. The team achieved this by lowering the number of outside firms they tap, and getting tough on billing practices, while also leveraging alternative fees and technology.
