Last month we celebrated four terrific legal departments. They were innovative, fearless, interesting, crafty, even photogenic. As part of our Best Legal Departments issue, we told their stories: how they came back from the abyss, how they prevailed during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, how they triumphed over scandal.

This month, the story is rather different. We take an in-depth look at General Motors Company, the “new” GM, which, like the old GM, sometimes was on the receiving end of harsh criticism over its vehicles’ safety. And senior reporter Sue Reisinger, as part of that examination, looks at its legal department and the actions that the company, pre- and postbankrutpcy, has taken over the past decade or so under three general counsel.
