The electronic cigarette business is booming. A study published this week [PDF] by researchers at the University of California, San Diego, revealed that beginning this year, there were some 466 brands of e-cigarettes available for purchase online in 7,764 unique flavors. Bloomberg Industries estimates that e-cigarette sales could reach $1.5 billion in the U.S. this year, and potentially surpass regular cigarettes on the market by as early as 2023. Not surprisingly considering the surge in their popularity, e-cigarettes, which are battery-powered and vaporize nicotine, have found their way into the U.S. workplace.

Although the jury is still out on the benefits and dangers of “vaping”—often billed as a healthier alternative to smoking tobacco cigarettes—it’s probably a good idea for employers to decide how they want to handle employees who vape before workplace problems arise.
