The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has canceled the federal trademark registrations for the name of the National Football League’s Washington Redskins, ruling that “a substantial composite of Native Americans found the term Redskins to be disparaging.”

The decision by the PTO’s Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, issued Wednesday, is considered highly unusual because the Redskin registration has existed for decades. The first Redskin registration dates back to 1967.
