Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s former general counsel and executive vice president has “rolled back” his in-house career and is heading back to law firm life. Thomas Mars, who left the company last year, is set to join Atlanta-based Taylor English Duma as a partner.
“In his seven years as Wal-Mart’s GC, Tom managed and guided the resolution of more high-stakes legal matters than most lawyers see in a lifetime,” said Marc Taylor, a cofounder of Taylor English, in a statement. He noted that during Mars’ tenure, Wal-Mart’s legal department grew into a world-class organization, many high-profile disputes were resolved, and the largest employment class action ever brought against a corporate defendant was dismissed in Wal-Mart’s favor. (Of course, it was also during Mars’ time there that the company became embroiled in allegations of widespread bribery in Mexico.)
