There can be little doubt that in a time of increasing legal risks, the law department and its leaders are more likely to get the ear of those in the C-suite, and have more opportunities to weigh in on the direction of the business. However, a recent survey of CEOs and business owners shows that while there is more alignment and inclusion between legal and other business functions, the legal department isn’t the go-to resource for business advice.

The survey, from Special Counsel, the legal staffing arm of Adecco, a multinational human resources solutions provider, reveals more about the roles that legal departments are playing within the corporation and its leadership structure. Leaders of companies covered by the survey—many of which were smaller or midsized—seem to put a lot of stock in the legal department’s work, but not its skill in working out business strategy.
