Haggis and Scotch pie, to name two traditional Scottish culinary concoctions, may not be as good for the system as you’d like. A little-considered issue in last week’s Scottish independence referendum was Scotland’s food-safety record, which isn’t stellar, according to the blog Food Safety News. It says food-borne illnesses strike 132,000 people in the country every year, with 2,330 going to hospitals and 50 dying.

The folks at Food Safety News say infections, such as those caused by E. coli and campylobacter, occur in higher rates in the Scottish Isles than elsewhere in the U.K. In addition to these illnesses, obesity is another sizable problem in the country. Even though certain food sectors are big businesses in Scotland, such as baking, fish, meat and dairy processing, fruit and vegetable processing accounts for only 0.5 percent of the food manufacturing there, say the authors.
