Back in July, American Express Co. made a big announcement: it would spin off American Express Global Business Travel, its travel solutions arm, in a 50-50 joint venture with a group of investors. Now, the 3-month-old operation has a head lawyer of its own, travel industry legal veteran Eric Bock.

Bock’s appointment was announced on Tuesday, one of his first official days of work at AmEx GBT’s New York City offices. He will head a department of about 20 lawyers spread around the globe. The new chief legal officer comes to AmEx GBT from Travelport Worldwide Ltd., where he served as CLO and chief administrative officer. He says he is excited to be part of a company that has the independence and infusion of capital that comes from the new joint venture setup, while still maintaining the legacy of American Express behind it. “The company now has the flexibility to make the investments it needs to make to drive it forward in the travel space,” Bock told CorpCounsel.com.
