The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has begun its “out-of-cycle review” of India’s intellectual property practices, a move the government promised to take when it released its 2014 Special 301 Report in April.

Such a review could in theory lead to U.S. sanctions against India if the USTR were to conclude that India’s policies continue to impede protection of intellectual property and that it has shown no inclination to change.
