One of the few pleasures of being an editor these days is the occasional lunch or dinner with an out-of-town writer. When our columnists or freelance reporters come to New York for business or pleasure, we try to see them, hopefully over lunch or dinner. It’s always good to break bread with someone you edit all year and to be able to connect the words to a face.
It was Ryan McConnell’s turn a few months ago. Ryan is a former federal prosecutor who heads a small firm in Houston. He writes online columns about and teaches classes in risk and compliance. His column is a good read; not only does it contain good advice, but he riffs off of current events in a nifty way. He was in town for a conference, and we arranged to have dinner together at one of our favorite Italian restaurants in New York’s Flatiron District. Would we mind if a couple of friends tagged along?
