Patent litigation in the U.S. declined in the third quarter of 2014, but the overall number of patent lawsuits filed to date puts 2014 on track to be the second most litigious for patent suits in history, according to a group that helps small- and medium-sized businesses fight frivolous patent suits.

Research conducted by Unified Patents, which strategically protects broad areas of technology to deter lawsuits filed by patent trolls, found that the number of patent lawsuits filed in 2014 is expected to exceed the 5,038 lawsuits filed in 2012, currently the second most litigious year for patent litigation. The biggest year for patent litigation was 2013.
