Despite what your parents may tell you, bullying doesn’t end in high school. Kristy Kunisaki Marino of Foley & Lardner says some recent surveys indicate plenty of grown-up bullies are doing their thing in the workplace. “A survey commissioned earlier this year by the Workplace Bullying Institute indicated that 27 percent of Americans have suffered abusive conduct at work, while 72 percent of those surveyed are aware that workplace bullying happens,” she reports.

Bullying can lead to decreased productivity of employees, increased turnover and low morale, says Marino. But she notes that “while a company’s investigators may be trained to identify behavior which could lead to legal liability, bullying, while harmful, may not always result [in] a legally cognizable claim.”
