Verizon Communications Inc. didn’t have to look far to find its new general counsel. The New York-based communications and technology company announced on Monday that it is tapping Craig Silliman, currently senior vice president for public policy at the company, to run the legal department.

Silliman will officially take the helm on Jan. 1, replacing Randal Milch, who has been in the position since October 2008. As general counsel, Silliman will be the leader of the company’s public policy, legal, regulatory, government affairs and securities groups; he’ll also continue serving in his current role as public policy chief. Milch will be taking a new position at the company: strategic policy adviser to Lowell McAdam, chairman and chief executive of Verizon.
