Is too much of a good thing a bad thing? “Some employers still fear … that praising employees too much for good work may create some workplace liability,” says Renee Inomata of Burns & Levinson in a recent post. Luckily, she says the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts has recently given employers the go-ahead to appreciate their employees.

The plaintiff in Cagnina v. Philadelphia Insurance was a longtime employee with more than 20 years at the company who had received positive performance reviews throughout her time there. In 2013, her employer gave her a memo with ways to improve her performance, but told her it wasn’t formal. After receiving it, she worked longer hours and was praised by her supervisors.
