Heather Faltin is not a trial attorney, nor does she aspire to be one. She’s an in-house lawyer for Comcast Cable Communications. So why was she voluntarily sitting in a Dechert conference room in Philadelphia, nervously waiting to cross-examine a witness as part of an intense three-day training that brought back all the pressures of law school?
Short answer: She’s a senior patent counsel, and her company’s litigation chief suggested that it was a good opportunity. Having joined Comcast in 2011, she was glad they wanted to help develop her skills. “It felt like they were invested in my career,” she says.
