As anyone who’s been told “you look great for your age” can attest, compliments backfire all the time. But few have backfired as ferociously as the email that former Chief Judge Randall Rader of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit sent to Edward Reines, a leading patent litigator at Weil, Gotshal & Manges.
In November the Federal Circuit publicly reprimanded Reines for widely sharing the email he received in March from Rader, who raved over Reines’ argument skills and wrote that another judge had praised him at a private luncheon. Rader added in the email that he was “proud” to be Reines’ “friend for life,” and he encouraged Reines to show the letter to others.
