With new high-profile hacks hitting corporate America on a regular basis, business leaders are getting more serious about protecting their networks and data from threats. The White House and Congress are talking about it, boards and legal departments are talking about it, and more companies are ponying up real cash for software that’s meant to provide high-tech protection. But even the best cybersecurity solutions are not going to be of much use if they are never taken out of the shrinkwrap.

It can be disconcerting to see this happening at some companies, according to the new “Security on the Shelf” report released by Trustwave Holdings Inc. and Osterman Research. From the data, it looks like many companies are leaving software on the shelf or failing to take advantage of the protections these solutions offer.
