Picking up Lenovo’s startlingly light Yoga 3 Pro laptop, I couldn’t help but think of that old Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup commercial—you know, the one where the kid eating chocolate bumps into the kid eating peanut butter and they discover that the mix tastes delicious. I thought about that ancient ad because I wanted this mix, a device that was part laptop, part tablet, to work well, too. The hybrid is a great idea, but vendors have long struggled to strike the right balance between portability and usability. Does the Yoga 3 Pro ($1,300 for the base configuration) nail the formula? No, but it comes tantalizingly close. The question is: Is that close enough?
The answer depends on how you use (or hope to use) a laptop and tablet. If you’re a road warrior who primarily uses a lightweight laptop, with a bit of tablet use mixed in, then yes, it’s time to whip out the credit card. If you’re the sort of lawyer who tries to do as much as possible with a tablet and leave the laptop behind whenever feasible, then skip the Yoga and opt for a Surface Pro 3. That device is about as close as the Yoga to perfecting the hybrid, but from the other direction, stressing tablet functionality over laptop use. And finally, if you’ve been holding out for a true hybrid, a device that is both an excellent laptop and an excellent tablet, keep holding out. That device isn’t here yet.
