Is the face of food safety in the U.S. about the change dramatically? As noted by attorney Baylen Linnekin writing in Reason, President Barack Obama’s 2016 proposed budget would take away food-safety oversight responsibilities from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, putting this task in the hands of a new food-safety agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
“The plan would be a big loss for the FDA … which saw its food-safety budget and staff increase thanks to the passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act in 2011,” says Linnekin. He also suspects it’s not likely a coincidence that FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg recently announced she was leaving the agency.
