The top lawyer for Microsoft Corp. has a new prescription for suppliers that don’t give employees paid time off. In a blog post published Thursday, General counsel Brad Smith says the company is taking steps to ensure the suppliers it does business with give employees at least 15 days of paid leave each year.

“We rely on a large group of outside companies to do what they do best. The people who work for our suppliers are critical to our success and we want them to have the benefit of paid time off,” writes Smith. Over the next year, Microsoft will ensure that its suppliers with more than 50 employees give staff 15 days of paid time off a year, whether in vacation and sick leave or just unrestricted days.
