Bruce Jenner made international headlines when he sat down with Diane Sawyer and bravely explained how he’s always been confused by his gender identity and identifies as a woman. In an era when transgender people are still routinely discriminated against, it was a particularly poignant TV moment—and it has echoes in the modern workplace.

“It’s important for employers to remember that he’s not the only one,” says Zosha Millman of LXBN. She notes that only 2 to 5 percent of the global population identifies as transgender, but that number could rise as acceptance does. “As the general public increasingly recognizes the transgender community, employers can expect more lawsuits around mistreatment of transgender workers,” she says.
