Deval Patrick, the former general counsel of Texaco Inc. and the Coca-Cola Co., who went on to become governor of Massachusetts, will receive the Minority Corporate Counsel Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award next month.

A noted civil rights lawyer before going corporate, Patrick was the first African-American to serve as governor of Massachusetts, and only the second black governor in the U.S. Last month the investment firm Bain Capital announced Patrick was joining it on April 14 as a managing director to work on “social impact” investments.
