Whether they’re negotiating an agreement during an M&A transaction or beating back the threat of a lawsuit, many general counsel say they are only as good as their team—and that team often includes outside attorneys. So how are GCs selecting the best and brightest to maximize their legal firepower?

“The General Counsel Excellence Report 2015,” published by the Global Legal Post and TerraLex, an international law firm network, provides some data to explain GC and outside counsel relationships around the world at 127 corporations. It finds that when it’s time to recruit law firms, GCs are looking to negotiate lower fees, but they also rely on relationships to help make their choices.
