Most companies, even the most successful ones, have to deal with a round of layoffs at some point. Many times, layoffs occur in the context of broader changes in the business, including corporate restructuring. In addition to letting employees go during these tumultuous periods, companies also may be searching for new captains to steer the refitted ship in the right direction.

Looking for new top executives while in layoff mode is an organizational challenge. But if done right, it can help put the company on better long-term footing. In addition, getting new leadership can be an opportunity for general counsel to demonstrate his or her expertise and value in running the business.
