Are the office coffee machines not cutting it when it comes to boosting legal department productivity? You might want to focus less on caffeine and more on people’s natural circadian rhythms, says Christopher Barnes in The Harvard Business Review.

“This natural—and hardwired—ebb and flow in our ability to feel alert or sleepy has important implications for you and your employees,” he says. And though employees may try their hardest to be productive throughout the entire workday, their bodies actually are working against them. For instance, it takes a few hours at the beginning of the day for alertness and energy to kick in and peak, says Barnes. And that peak doesn’t last long: shortly after lunch it will decline again, and this has nothing to do with whether someone had a full lunch at The Cheesecake Factory.
