If you are the general counsel or hiring manager for an in-house legal department, I’m guessing that you don’t often hear your CFO say, “Go ahead and spend whatever you need—okay? No limits on legal spend!” Unless you are dealing with a major legal crisis, that messaging doesn’t happen very often. Usually, the directive from the CFO (or CEO) is a resounding message to control legal spend or, even better, reduce it.
