Across the country, there are thousands of general counsel in companies large and small. But there is only one Juggler of Justice. That’s the title held by Derek Holland, 38. He’s also the vice president and general counsel of Red Frog Events, but he only uses that stuffier designation when dealing with government regulators. When he’s having a meeting in a camper-themed conference room or playing foosball against co-workers, he’s known by the more alliterative moniker. All of the Red Frog employees have similar wacky titles—such as “King of Ka-Ching” and “Lord of the Files”—a clear indicator that this is not your normal startup.
A native of Canada and graduate of Boston College Law School, Holland discovered Red Frog through his love of running. While working at Bryan Cave he learned of the Warrior Dash, a race that features mud, obstacles and post-dash beer. When he learned that the nascent company that ran it was looking for its first GC, he applied.
