For many companies, achieving better diversity has risen to a top board-level priority. But how, exactly, can that goal be achieved, and just what can the general counsel do to help? Khurram Nasir Gore, GC and chief strategy officer at Personal Blackbox Co., recently took on the issue in the Association of Corporate Counsel’s blog.

Step one is for the law department to support law firms that value diverse associates. “The law firm environment naturally promotes the visibility of senior partners in order to demonstrate commitment to the client,” explains Gore, but this can diminish contributions made by diverse associates. It also results “in a missed opportunity for a law department to request diverse associates who have already demonstrated high value and expertise on matters.” Instead, reward firms who put their more junior associates on display, suggests Gore.
