Adobe Systems Inc. is combating the scourge of legalese one style guide at a time. According to Robert Ambrogi, the company’s legal department is taking its guide, which was developed to help in-house staff write legal documents in plainer English, and making it available to the public.
“We want to release this under a Creative Commons attribution and let others take our work product and make it their own in the hope that as a profession we’ll change the way we communicate,” said Michael Dillon, Adobe’s senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary. The GC mentioned his own blogging as an impetus for the move. “When you write a blog, you write to be engaging and accessible, but we don’t write our legal documents that way,” he told Ambrogi, who calls the guide a “sort of Strunk and White for the legal profession.”
