The rise of app-based software, whether found on a smartphone, tablet or computer, has built many efficiencies—and, in some cases, distractions—into the lives of users. Apps have found their way into the workplace, where in the best case they can help get more work done, but in some scenarios can lead to liability for employers.
The key for companies is balancing the rights of employees to use apps on their own time—rights protected by such entities as the National Labor Relations Board—with legitimate employer concerns. It can be a tricky equation, requiring companies to understand what apps their employees may use and what potential problems might arise.
