Are annual performance reviews an anachronism? Vauhini Vara takes on this long-standing business practice in The New Yorker and notes that recently The Gap Inc. and Microsoft Corp. have nixed the practice, and last month consulting firm Accenture announced it’s also getting rid of them in favor of more regular feedback.
Critics say the process of reviewing employees yearly is cumbersome, expensive and can hurt relationships between managers and employees. Additionally, some social scientists say reviews often are quite biased. “Data shows that all kinds of personal quirks and biases, both conscious and not, influence our appraisals of other people,” says Vara. Studies indicate that often it is about the person doing the review, more so than the employee’s whose job is at stake.
