Throughout his time in office, President Barack Obama has prioritized efforts to promote alternative energy and reduce carbon emissions. This week he announced his administration’s latest environmental initiative, a set of new regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency requiring significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. over the next 15 years.

The final version of the EPA’s “Clean Power Plan,” which has raised vociferous objections from some states and business groups, could have broad impact on several industries. In-house counsel should make themselves aware of the potential benefits and pitfalls raised by the regulations so their companies can be prepared to deal with what’s to come.
