It’s an odd thing about the airline industry: For all its reliance on cutting-edge technology on the flight deck and on the ground, its first forays into mobile apps were generally disappointing—too clunky and basic. If the glamour of flight was no longer in the skies, it wasn’t in one’s hands, either. But airline apps have made big strides lately, and the best of them have become valuable tools.

For lawyers and other time-pressed road warriors, a mobile device should help optimize time and productivity outside the office. So the ideal airline app would enable fliers to access key flight information and tools in a fast, easy and timely way. Judged by that standard, here’s how the apps of five U.S. airlines, three majors and two (relatively speaking) low-cost carriers, stack up. (Except where noted, all are available for iPad, iPhone and Android. All were tested on iOS.)
