“Business issues today are legal issues,” notes Jane Kidner, writing in the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail. She says recent hiring announcements in the press all have one thing in common: though they’re not being scooped up for legal positions, many of the new employees boast law degrees.

Kidner gives a few reasons why this is so, perhaps most notably an increase in legal issues in businesses. “You can rise only so far in an organization without seeing your corporate issues take on a significant legal aspect,” she says. At the same time, lawyers are being called on more and more to advise at the boardroom table.
