If a tree falls in the … I mean, if a “connected” car gets wirelessly hacked and causes an accident, who is liable? It’s a question recently posed by John Villasenor in Slate’s Future Tense column. He says there are three main groups with potential responsibility: the actual cyberattackers, the car manufacturer and perhaps even the vehicle’s owner.
Villasenor points out that actually finding the cyberattackers could be difficult, compounded by the fact that if they’re located outside of the crash’s jurisdiction, prosecuting them and seeking compensation can be next to impossible.
