Don’t know what the term “cisgender” means? You’re probably not alone. But Daniel Schwartz of Shipman & Goodwin suggests that you learn it quickly and perhaps make sure your human resources department is in on the lesson.

According to the authoritative source, Dictionary.com, cisgender is defined as “noting or relating to a person whose gender identity corresponds with that person’s biological sex assigned at birth.” So, if a baby is born male and grows up to identify as a man, it would be cisgendered. The term was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013 and in 2014, Facebook added the term “cis” to its gender options.
