Not all questions are created equally, especially when it comes to interviewing job applicants. Christina Stoneburner of Fox Rothschild reminds us that during the hiring process, “a mistake can be so easily made that could lead to a lawsuit by the applicant or losing a qualified candidate.” Here are some of her top what-not-to-do’s:
• Saying something perceived as discriminatory: Stoneburner says it’s rare that an interviewer will say something outright discriminatory, but they may accidentally do so. She uses the examples of a candidate who lists fluency in Spanish on his résumé and has a Hispanic last name. The interviewer can ask him about his proficiency in the language, but shouldn’t ask whether he learned it from his parents.
