The editors and reporters of Corporate Counsel are pleased to announce their first-annual Lifetime Achievement Award. And for this special, first time ever accolade, we’re celebrating the life and career of Ben Heineman Jr., who was General Electric Co.’s senior vice president-general counsel from 1987 to 2003, and SVP for law and public affairs from 2004 until his retirement at the end of 2005.

We can only briefly summarize Heineman’s achievements here. He created the template for the modern big-company legal department when he came to GE back in 1987. His alumni now work at legal departments throughout the globe. He hired the smartest lawyers he could find, and created a culture of transparency and compliance in the legal department and the company.
