It’s general knowledge that the growth of social media over the last decade or so has been astounding. In the month of June alone, Facebook had an average of 968 million active users a day. LinkedIn now can boast of more than 380 million registered members and Twitter users send around 500 million tweets per day. The rapid increase in social media use has made a whole lot of data about peoples’ work and personal lives available. But it’s also raised difficult questions about privacy.
These privacy challenges are especially important for employers that may be tempted to see what a prospective or current employee is doing online. And many U.S. states have recently passed laws that give employees and job applicants protections from employer snooping. So what’s an employer or prospective employer to do?
