As medical practice communications move to mobile platforms, more safety precautions need to be taken to ensure the information is HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliant, according to Michael Kline of Fox Rothschild. He says 83 percent of doctors and 71 percent of nurses use mobile technology to document patient care. Here are some of his tips to protect patient data:

• Encryption: This doesn’t mean only that you should use passwords on phones (which you should do). According to Kline, “email programs should be able to assure that the message cannot be read until it has been transmitted to the provider’s device.”
