When people start making travel plans, whether for business or pleasure, nowadays they are more likely to open a Web browser or smartphone app than call a travel agent. In the last 15 years, the rise of websites such as Orbitz and Kayak.com have revolutionized the business, and all the while Karen Klein has been working behind the scenes on the legal issues that crop up at the intersection between travel and technology. After working in-house at Orbitz from 2001 to 2007 and Kayak.com from 2007 to 2013, Klein decided to take on a new challenge in a similar field.
In 2013 she become general counsel of Hotel Tonight, a mobile-only company that specializes in last-minute hotel deals. Klein spoke to senior editor Rich Steeves; an edited version of their conversation follows.
