It’s that time of year again. Foliage may be changing colors where you live, temperatures are dropping and it’s getting dark before the workday ends. But fall isn’t just a season for apple picking, trick-or-treating and raking leaves. It’s also National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Forget ghosts and goblins this October; the hackers out there are all too real.

The awareness month, which commenced 12 years ago under the leadership of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cybersecurity Alliance, is a time for companies to think about what they are doing to stay safe online. While it’s virtually impossible to ensure complete online security (there are always new bad guys and new ways of hacking), in-house counsel can play a big role in helping their companies prepare for and survive an attack.
